Cluster of Excellence
Engineering of Advanced Materials
On 13 and 14 July, EAM presented itself in the pedestrian area of Nuremberg as part of the VDI Technikmeile 2012. With exhibits including flexible printed solar cells and lightweight metallic components, visitors could see and feel products of key activities of the cluster for themselves. Another highlight was a demonstration of the so-called “Lotus effect”. Lotus leaves, kindly provided by the Botanical Gardens in Erlangen were shown to be self-cleaning, a result of their surface nanostructure. A slideshow at the stand let the visitors explore the beautiful world at the smallest scales. The EAM stand was located in a tent promoted by the Cluster Nanotechnology and shared with the Nanoinitiative Bayern GmbH, the company ARA-Coatings and the “Junge Forscherinnen und Forscher e.V.” initiative. Due to the expertise present from industry, research and education, the numerous visitors could get an unique overview over current research and applications of nanomaterials and nanotechnology. The stand was very busy on both days and received a variety of visitors, ranging from school classes, parents with children, retired people and tourists who just happened to be passing by. All in all it was a very successful event for those staffing the stand and the visitors.
